Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients with complex clinical conditions needing restoration and replacement of teeth. Prosthodontists are dentists who have specialized in the field of prosthodontics. These highly trained professionals provide care to patients with missing teeth, or having significant damage to their existing teeth. They also work with congenital defects as well as problems arising from trauma and neglect.
Prosthodontists treat many diverse and complex dental conditions and restore optimum function and esthetics. Some prosthodontal conditions include:
- Crowns : Caps that cover the teeth if decay is extensive. Bridges : Cover gaps between teeth. Inlays : Ceramic material that is bonded to the tooth to cover unsightly fillings and for added support. Veneers : Thin layers of porcelain that is bonded to the front of the teeth for alignment, or to improve their color or form. Tooth Whitening : A process that lightens discolored enamel and dentin. Complete Dentures : Dentures that replace all of the natural teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both. Removable Partial Dentures : These replace only the missing teeth leaving the natural teeth as and where they are. They can be removed for easy cleaning. Dental Implants : Instead of using complete or partial dentures, new teeth are implanted. These give the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. Traumatic injuries to the mouth's structures and/or teeth.
- Oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care.
Prosthodontist are also frequently called upon to treat TMD related disorders, congenital disorders, and sleep disorders. These conditions are treated by planning and fabricating various prostheses and orthotic appliances.
