OAHU NEUROLOGISTS
Back to Oahu Doctors
Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the nervous system, which encompasses the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles and autonomic nervous system. Physicians specializing in the field of neurology are called neurologists. Neurologists diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system.
Neurological disorders are diseases or injuries of the central nervous system (brain, brainstem, and cerebellum), the peripheral nervous system (peripheral nerves and cranial nerves), or the autonomic nervous system (parts of which are located in both central and peripheral nervous system). Sometimes physical injury to the brain, spinal cord, or nerves is the cause of neurological disorders. Sometimes they can result from biochemical causes. At other times, the cause may be unknown and only the effects are seen. Quite often, neurological disorders are a sign of an imbalance in the system, which makes us susceptible to various diseases which settle in weak areas of your body.
Some neurological disorders are:
- Headaches – mainly due to migraine or tension, or a combination of the two.
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) - illness characterized by prolonged, debilitating fatigue and multiple nonspecific symptoms such as headaches, recurrent sore throats, muscle and joint pains, memory and concentration difficulties.
- Seizures and Epilepsies
- Cerebral Palsy - associated with developmental brain injuries that occur during fetal development, birth, or shortly after birth. It is characterized by a disruption of motor skills, with symptoms such as spasticity, paralysis, or seizures.
- Multiple Sclerosis - a non-contagious chronic autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system. . Due to its effects of the nervous system, it can lead to long-term impaired mobility and disability in severe cases.
- Alzheimer's Disease - an irreversible, progressive disorder in which brain cells (neurons) deteriorate, resulting in the loss of cognitive functions, primarily memory, judgment and reasoning, movement coordination, and pattern recognition.
- Parkinson's Disease - a neurodegenerative disease of the substantia nigra (an area in the basal ganglia), which involves a breakdown of the nerve cells in the motor area of the brain.
- Bacterial , fungal , viral and parasitic infections of the central nervous system ( encephalitis ), brain envelopes ( meningitis ) and peripheral nerves ( neuritis ).
- Brain tumors , spinal cord tumors , and tumors of the peripheral nerves.
- Traumatic injuries to the brain, spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves.
- Stupor and coma – due to metabolic disturbances, intoxications, and mechanical causes.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - when tendons in the wrist become inflamed after being aggravated. The carpals (a tunnel of bones) and the ligaments in the wrist narrow, pinching nerves that reach the fingers and the muscle at the base of the thumb.
