OAHU DERMATOLOGISTS
Back to Oahu Doctors
Dermatologists are physicians who specialize and train in the management of skin diseases like dermatitis and other infectious conditions, cancers, melanomas, moles, and other tumors of the skin; nail disorders and diseases like nail bacteria, fungi, yeast and virus, paronychia, psoriasis, and nail injuries; and hair disorders like alopecia, excess hair, hair loss, and head lice.
Some medical conditions can easily be cured by general practitioners, but there are others for which you must see a dermatologist.
You should see a dermatologist when you have
- Common skin diseases such as acne, eczema, or rosacea
- Moles that have grown, bleed, or look unusual
- Herpes
- Facial flushing
- Hair disorders like alopecia, hair loss, or head lice
- Nail infections like fungus, nail injuries, or ingrown nails
- A suspicious lesion of the skin (which could be skin cancer)
Skin cancer is curable if detected early. It is thus important to see a dermatologist just as soon as you discover a lesion that looks suspicious to you. There are certain risk factors that you should be aware of as they increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer. These risk factors are:
- Family history of skin cancer
- History of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sun lamps
- Sun-sensitive, tend to sunburn in the sun, rather than tan
- Severe blistering sunburns
- Fair skin with blond hair and blue, green, or gray eyes
- Large unusual moles
- History of x-ray treatments for acne
Too much exposure to the sun and sunburn is a major risk factor in the development of skin cancer. A visitor to Oahu should consider this factor seriously as a lot of time is spent out in the sun - whether it's on the beaches, or hikes on the mountains. Sunburns are literally burns from the sun's ultra-violet (UV) rays. In minor cases, there is redness and irritation in the skin. In severe cases there is severe skin burning and blistering. If the skin is not treated immediately, there is an increased risk of skin cancer developing. The best thing is always prevention, and to prevent sunburns, it is essential that you use sunscreen prior to going out in the sun. This protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. But in case you do get sunburns, especially if they are severe with blisters and extreme pain, you must immediately see a dermatologist.
You must also see a dermatologist if you have any of the other conditions mentioned above. It becomes even more important if one or more of the risk factors are involved.
To make finding a dermatologist easy for you during your trip to Oahu, Oahu.us has listed all the dermatologists under their respective areas. You can get in touch with any one of the dermatologists depending on the area of Oahu that you are in.
