OAHU UROLOGISTS
Back to Oahu Doctors

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract in females and of the genitourinary tract in males. It is a multi-disciplinary field that includes urinary infections and "surgical" problems such as the correction of congenital abnormalities of the urinary / reproductive systems and the surgical management of cancers involving the urinary and (male) reproductive organs. Urology is closely related to the medical fields of nephrology, andrology, and gynecology as the organs involved overlap each other, and often one disorder affects the other. A urologist is a physician who has specialized in the field of urology.

Some common urologic diseases and disorders, with their symptoms, are:

  • Blood in urine (Hematuria ): Can be caused by a urinary infection, kidney stones, or an injury. Urine becomes pink, red, or tea-colored.
  • Enlarged prostate : The prostate, a small gland around the duct that drains the bladder, becomes enlarged (in men). Symptoms include frequent urge to urinate but able to pass little or no urine, blood in urine, and fever.
  • Kidney failure : Kidneys lose their ability to filter body wastes. Signs of kidney failure are less urination, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and muscle aches.
  • Kidney stones : Rock-like concretions of minerals form in the kidney. Typical symptoms include sharp mid-back pain, blood in urine, painful urination, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Urinary retention (in men) : When the duct that drains the bladder (the urethra) becomes blocked, and the bladder cannot be completely emptied during urination. There are frequent, strong urges to urinate accompanied by an inability to actually pass very much urine. There may be dribbling or leakage during the day and while you are asleep. You may need to push in order to start urination.
  • Urinary tract infection (more common in women) : Also called UTI, it is the infection of bladder or kidney. Symptoms include a frequent need to urinate with inability to pass more than a small amount, pain and burning during urination, and dribbling or leaking during the day and while asleep. Urine may develop a foul odor or become blood-specked, or there may be pain in the abdomen and side.
  • Childhood Nephrotic Syndrome : This may occur at any age, but is more common between the ages of 2 and 8. The signs are high levels of protein in the urine, low levels of protein in the blood, and swelling resulting from build up of salt and water.

Sometimes the signs and symptoms of urologic disorders do not sound very serious. But as with all other diseases, it is always better to consult a doctor just as soon as you start noticing a sign or symptom of a disease. A disorder or a disease can always be treated much faster and more easily in the initial stages, than it can once the disease has taken over completely.

For your convenience, Oahu.us has compiled a list of urologists in Oahu.
