OAHU PODIATRISTS/ ORTHOTISTS
Back to Oahu Doctors

Podiatry is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and medical, surgical, mechanical, physical, and adjunctive treatment of the diseases, injuries, and defects of the foot, ankle, and leg. Also called ‘chiropody' or ‘podiatric medicine', its areas of specialization include surgery, sports medicine, orthopedics, public health, and even sub-specialties such as pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, wound management, and diabetic foot care.

  • Achilles tendonitis : Irritation and inflammation of the tendon that attaches to the back of the heel bone. It is often seen in sportspersons during or after exercise. Symptoms include pain along the tendons, accompanied by swelling and tenderness.
  • Bunions : Misaligned big toe joints, where the first joint slants outwards, and the second joint slants inwards towards other toes. The big toe becomes swollen and painful.
  • Corns/calluses : Areas of thick dead layers of skin, resulting from repeated wearing of tight, ill-fitting shoes. Most common on the big and fifth toes, but also found underneath ends of foot bones. Very painful on standing or walking.
  • Hammertoe : A condition stemming from muscle imbalance, in which the toe is bent in a claw-like position. There is great pain and difficulty in moving the toe.
  • Heel pain/spurs : These are growths of the bone on the underside and forepart of the heel bone. Usually occurs when the plantar tendon pulls at its attachment to the heel bone. There is great pain below or behind the heel.
  • Ingrown Toenails : This happens when the corners or sides of the nails dig deep into the skin. It is frequently caused by improper nail trimming, shoe pressure, injury, fungus infection, heredity and/or poor foot structure.
  • Neuromas : Enlarged benign growths of nerves, mainly between third and fourth toes. Symptoms include burning pain in the ball of the foot extending to the toes, and numbness in the toes.
  • Plantar warts : Caused by viral infection, they occur on the sole of the foot and look like calluses but grow inwards. Severe pain on walking.
  • Plantar fasciitis : Sharp pain in the inside part of the bottom of the heel accompanied by swelling.
  • Shin splints : Pain at either side of the leg bone caused by muscle or tendon inflammation.
  • Stress fractures : Incomplete cracks in bones. If left untreated, may become complete fractures.
  • Athlete's foot : Fungal infection. Itching and burning between the toes and on the soles. Nails thicken and crumble, skin cracks and smells.

Sometimes hurting feet are signals of other serious conditions - such as arthritis, gout, diabetes, and obesity. At other times foot problems may be congenital, exercise and sports related, or associated with ill-fitted shoes. Whatever the cause, foot problems should not be taken lightly.

During your trip to Oahu, you are bound to be on your feet most of the time. To avoid any kind of foot problem, you must take good care of your feet. If despite good caring, you feel any pain coming, or think you have any of the symptoms given above, please do not ignore them. See a podiatrist as soon as possible. For your convenience, Oahu.us has compiled a list of podiatrists in Oahu.
