A Medical Center is a facility that provides comprehensive health related education, complete clinical care, research and service. It is usually academic in nature and acts as a teaching affiliate for a Medical School. A Medical Center provides easily accessible health services, including in-patient facilities, to the whole community.

There are several Medical Centers on the island of Oahu. A list has been compiled for you by Oahu.us. Each one of Medical Centers listed provides excellence in patient care, medical education, and biomedical research – resulting in exceptional health care.

Honolulu

1. Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children is affiliated with the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine and is considered leader in the care of women and children in the Pacific region. This 232-bed and 90-bassinet teaching hospital conducts more than $2 million in research activity annually.
Services:

  • Maternity - Genetic counseling, Fetal Diagnostic Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, high-risk maternity care, and labor and delivery services.
  • Pediatric - 24-hour pediatric emergency room, Blood & Cancer Center, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Counseling Center, and a number of valuable outreach programs such as the Emergency Transport and Mobile Therapy Teams.
  • Women – A range of diagnostic and therapy services for women after their child-bearing years, including mammography and other breast health diagnostics, and osteoporosis screening.








2. Kuakini Medical Center

Kuakini Medical Center is a non-profit organization providing comprehensive health care services at reasonable cost. This 250-bed teaching hospital has accredited programs in medical residency, surgical residency and geriatric fellowship under the John A. Burns School of Medicine. It also encourages research and offers several community service programs.
Services:

  • Cancer Care - Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and cancer rehabilitation.
  • Cardiac Care - Open heart surgery, cardiac catheterization and angioplasty, and cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Gastroenterology - including endoscopy and gastroscopy.
  • Geriatric - Geriatric medicine, long term care, and adult day services.
  • Orthopedic surgery - Arthroscopic surgery, joint replacement, and related rehabilitation services.
  • Pulmonary disease care - Video bronchoscopy, sleep disorder testing, and pulmonary rehabilitation.
  • Research - clinical research in various areas such as clinical trials for cancer care.

This non-profit Medical Center is a subsidiary of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. It is accredited and has 270 beds.

Queen's Medical Center is a private, non-profit, acute medical care facility offering a comprehensive range of primary and specialized care services. It is affiliated with the Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA) and is approved to participate in residency training by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. With 505 acute care beds and 28 sub-acute beds, Queen's Medical Center is the largest private hospital in Hawaii.

6. Tripler Army Medical Center

This largest Army medical treatment facility in the entire Pacific Basin serves the regions of Hawaii, Japan, Johnston Atoll, Guam, Eniwetok, Kwajalein, various Pacific Island Nations and American Samoa. Those eligible to receive care at the Center include active-duty service members of all branches of service; their eligible families; military-eligible retirees and their families; eligible veterans; and many Pacific Island Nation residents. Tripler is a major teaching center and provides graduate education programs in pharmacy, medicine, general surgery, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, pathology, urology, oral surgery, hospital administration and anesthesiology nursing; as well as nursing courses in obstetrics and gynecology. This 229-bed Medical Center provides quality medical care.
