General dentistry, or family dentistry as it is also called, provides comprehensive dental care. It covers all areas of dentistry and encompasses all ages and physical conditions. Dentists who practice general dentistry are called General Dentists or Family Dentists. They are trained to provide most dental procedures for patients.

A general dentist's services may include routine checkups, teeth cleanings, fillings, extractions, crowns and bridges, sealants, gum disease screening and treatment, and root canal therapy among other things. Often when the general dentist feels that the dental condition requires special skills or equipments, he or she will refer you to a specialist.
Some common dental conditions treated by a general dentist are:

  • Toothache/Tooth Decay: The primary cause of toothache is tooth decay (destruction of the tooth enamel) caused by the bacteria in the mouth that thrive on the sugars and starches in the food you eat.
  • Plaque : Plaque is invisible masses of harmful germs that live in the mouth and stick to the teeth. Acids in the plaque eat through the tooth enamel causing pain when you eat.
  • Dentinal Sensitivity: Occurs when the dentin (middle layer) of a tooth is exposed due to tooth decay, gum recession, long time tooth wear, or too vigorous brushing. Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks and foods is the most common symptom.
  • Pulpal Sensitivity: Occurs when the tooth's pulp is exposed due to tooth decay or infection. Symptoms are sensitivity to food temperatures or pressure.
  • Dental Caries : More commonly referred to as cavities, they are caused by acid erosion of the tooth enamel. Symptoms are sensitivity to sweet foods or to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Tooth Abrasion/Erosion: These refer to a loss of part of the tooth's outer covering, the enamel, and sometimes deeper parts of the tooth due to mechanical or frictional force. Both abrasion and erosion can affect the appearance of the teeth and cause sensitivity and pain.

Dental care should be of utmost importance to anyone, and the best thing to do in this regard is to have regular checkups from a general dentist. This helps in preventing dental disease before it requires involved care.

If you feel you have a dental problem during your stay in Oahu, get it treated by a general dentist. Don't wait till after the condition has worsened.
