OAHU DIVING / HYPERBARIC MEDICINE
Back to Oahu Doctors

Hyperbaric Medicine refers to the use of oxygen for medical therapy at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. It is used in the treatment of decompression sickness, abnormal oxygen transport capacity of the blood, carbon-monoxide poisoning, necrotizing fasciitis (a rare infection of the deeper layers of the skin and tissue), gas embolism (gas bubbles in the bloodstream), and osteomyelitis (an infection of the bone) among other disorders. But its main therapeutic use has always been what it was initially developed for - a treatment for diving and other deep water related disorders.

Divers and other water sportsmen face certain physical and health risks when they go under water. These risks are mainly due to being unable to breathe fresh air naturally whilst submerged, relying on limited breathing gas supplies, fallible breathing equipment, or losing control of buoyancy.

If you are one of those who have come to Oahu to surf or swim, then it could prove beneficial to have a list of doctors who have specialized in diving and hyperbaric medicine. Oahu.us has compiled a list of such specialists for you.
