Enterprise Rent-A-Car is one of the largest rental car companies in North America. Unlike other rental car companies, Enterprise focuses on neighborhood markets and specializes in renting to people who need a temporary replacement car or a vehicle for a special occasion. Enterprise branches are located in neighborhoods, with an Enterprise branch within 15 miles of 90 percent of the U.S. population. The company currently operates more than 6,000 rental offices in five countries, with a rental car fleet of more than 600,000 vehicles including more than 160 different makes and models.

The company was founded by Jack Taylor in St. Louis in 1957, with just seven cars. Jack had started his Executive Leasing Company after hearing that people needed to rent cars while theirs were in the shop being repaired. This novel concept of leasing cars quickly picked up, and by 1962, 17 more vehicles were added. In 1969, Jack renamed his growing operation "Enterprise" in honor of the aircraft carrier aboard which he served as a decorated fighter pilot in World War II. Jack realized that the best growth opportunities were with hometown renters, not airport travelers. So, while the rest of the industry was competing at the edge of America's runways, Jack took his company into neighborhoods — where customers lived and worked. Enterprise soon began expanding to many different states. In 1974, Enterprise started its well-known "We'll Pick You Up" tradition that provides customers with a free ride to the rental office. Growth was fast and by 1980, the company's fleet reached 6,000 rental vehicles. In 1989, the company's name was changed to Enterprise Rent-A-Car to reflect the enormous growth of its rental car business. Enterprise now had more than 500 locations and more than 50,000 rental vehicles. By 1992 Enterprise surpassed $1 billion in annual revenues and nearly 10,000 employees in its work force. In 1993, Enterprise opened its first international office in Windsor, Canada; and in 1994 the first European rental office was opened in Reading, England. By 1999, Enterprise surpassed the half-million-vehicles mark in its rental and leasing fleet and 4,000 locations worldwide. Today Enterprise operates more than 6,000 offices in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Germany.
